Introduction
________ (21) ________ on board H.M.S. 'Beagle,' as naturalist, I was much ________ (22) ________ with certain facts in the distribution of the inhabitants of South America, and in the geological relations of the present to the past inhabitants of that continent. These facts seemed to me to ________ (23) ________ some light on the origin of species–that mystery of mysteries, as it has been called by one of our greatest philosophers. ________ (24) ________ my return home, it occurred to me, in 1837, that something might perhaps be made out on this question by patiently accumulating and reflecting on all sorts of facts which could possibly have any bearing on it. My work is now nearly finished; but ________ (29) ________ it will take me two or three more years to complete it, and as my health is far from strong, ________ (30) ________ to publish this Abstract.

Resolução comentada
A lacuna 27 está em: "from that period to the present day I ________ the same object". Dois pontos de gramática e sentido ajudam.
-
Tempo verbal: a expressão "from that period to the present day" (de então até hoje) indica ação que começou no passado e continua até agora. Isso pede o present perfect: "I have + particípio".
-
-
Eliminando as demais:
- "revoked" (revogar) não combina com "object" e contradiria a continuidade.
- "have chased round since" seria seguido de outro complemento e "since" duplicaria a ideia de "from that period", além de "round" não fazer sentido aqui.
- "steadied the ever" não tem verbo auxiliar e forma frase sem sentido.
- "have gradually given up" (desistir) contradiz o texto, pois ele continuou até publicar.
A única que une o present perfect, o objeto direto "the same object" e o sentido de persistência é "have steadily pursued".
Alternativa D.
Por que as outras alternativas estão erradas
- A"have totally revoked" (revogou totalmente) não faz sentido com "the same object" e contraria a ideia de continuidade.
- B"chased round since" é uma combinação inadequada: "since" repete "from that period" e deixa a frase sem objeto coerente.
- C"steadied the ever" não tem auxiliar nem estrutura gramatical válida e carece de sentido.
- E"have gradually given up" significa desistir aos poucos, o oposto do que Darwin afirma.
