Introduction

A lacuna 29 está na frase: "My work is now nearly finished; but ____ it will take me two or three more years to complete it, and as my health is far from strong, ____ to publish this Abstract."
O texto original de Darwin é: "but as it will take me two or three more years to complete it, and as my health is far from strong, I have been urged to publish this Abstract."
Veja a estrutura da frase:
- Há duas orações paralelas ligadas por "and": "___ it will take me two or three more years" e "as my health is far from strong".
- A segunda já começa com "as", no sentido de "visto que" ou "já que". Por paralelismo, a primeira também precisa de uma conjunção de causa, e "as" encaixa.
- Depois da conjunção vem uma oração completa ("it will take me..."), com sujeito e verbo. Isso elimina "in spite of" e "thanks to", que são preposições e pedem substantivo.
- "Thus" (portanto) é advérbio conclusivo e não introduz oração subordinada causal depois de "but".
- "Even" não cabe: "but even it will take" não faz sentido, e "even if/though" exigiria outra palavra.
O sentido é: "Meu trabalho está quase pronto, mas, como levará mais dois ou três anos para concluí-lo e minha saúde está longe de ser forte, fui instado a publicar este resumo".
Alternativa C.
Por que as outras alternativas estão erradas
- A"Thus" é advérbio conclusivo e não introduz a oração causal paralela a "as my health...".
- B"In spite of" é preposição (concessiva) e não aceita oração com sujeito e verbo; além disso, o sentido seria contrário.
- D"Even" não funciona como conjunção sozinho; "but even it will take" é agramatical.
- E"Thanks to" é locução prepositiva, exigiria substantivo, não a oração "it will take me...".
