Resolução comentada
A lacuna (30) fica no último período: "My work is now nearly finished; but as it will take me two or three more years to complete it, and as my health is far from strong, ________ to publish this Abstract." Darwin explica que, como o trabalho ainda levaria anos e a saúde é frágil, ele foi levado a publicar um resumo (Abstract) antes.
Vamos testar cada opção na estrutura da frase:
- A oração principal precisa de um verbo que seja seguido de "to publish" (infinitivo): "I have been urged to publish" = "fui instado a publicar".
- "I was split" e "I was detached" (dividido, separado) não aceitam "to publish" e não fazem sentido no contexto.
- "I have been careless" (fui descuidado) não combina com "to publish" e contradiz a ideia do parágrafo anterior, em que ele diz que não foi precipitado.
- "I have been" sozinho, seguido de "to publish", não forma uma estrutura natural aqui; faltaria o particípio que expressa a pressão externa.
A ideia de motivo ("as it will take me... and as my health is far from strong") leva à conclusão de que ele foi pressionado a publicar o resumo antes do trabalho completo. A construção passiva com "urged" completa a frase de modo coerente e gramatical.
Alternativa E.
Por que as outras alternativas estão erradas
- A"I was split" (fui dividido) não tem sentido nem aceita "to publish" depois.
- B"I was detached" (fui separado/desligado) não se liga a "to publish" e não expressa o motivo da publicação.
- C"I have been careless" contradiz o parágrafo, em que Darwin diz não ter sido precipitado, e não rege "to publish".
- D"I have been" deixa a frase incompleta: "to publish" exige um verbo como "urged" ou "induced".
