What is a friend?
Márcio Paulo Barbosa Pena Mascarenhas
Laurie: To me, a friend is someone who stands by you when you need them, someone who cares. Not like your parents, ________. Parents are either picking on you or telling you off, so sometimes it’s a pain. To a friend you can always open up.
Angela: I agree with Laurie but personally, I don’t think a friend has to be physically around all the time. I have friends that I haven’t seen in years, but I know if we get together, we’ll pick up right where we left off.
Fran: I think a friend is that old pal you’ve always gotten on with. I often look back on my schooldays and I think of the funny things my friends and I did together. As I see it, the friends you make in youth are friends to keep for a lifetime.
Gary: If you ask me, a friend is a person you have fun and relax with. My friends and I talk about movies, sports or politics. I don’t go round telling them my troubles and I don’t particularly want to hear theirs. I believe that if you don’t expect too much from people, you won’t be let down.

Resolução comentada
No texto, pick on significa implicar com, importunar, criticar alguém repetidamente ("Parents are either picking on you or telling you off" = os pais ou implicam com você ou dão bronca). Note que o verbo vem seguido de uma pessoa, que é o alvo da implicância.
A questão pede a frase em que o sentido não é esse. Vamos testar cada uma:
- (A) "He gets picked on by other boys because he's so small": ele é importunado pelos outros meninos por ser pequeno. Mesmo sentido.
- (B) "Just pick on one job and try to get that finished": aqui o verbo indica escolher um trabalho para terminar. Esse sentido de escolher é de pick out (ou pick one), não do pick on do texto. Sentido diferente.
- (C) "I hope he doesn't think I was picking on him": espero que ele não ache que eu estava implicando com ele. Mesmo sentido.
- (D) "She felt she was being picked on": ela sentiu que estavam implicando com ela. Mesmo sentido.
Portanto, só a (B) usa o verbo com outro significado (escolher), e não o de importunar.
Alternativa B.
Por que as outras alternativas estão erradas
- A"Picked on by other boys" é ser importunado por ser pequeno, o mesmo sentido do texto.
- C"Picking on him" é implicar com ele, o mesmo sentido do texto.
- D"Being picked on" é ser alvo de implicância, o mesmo sentido do texto.
Assunto: Expressões idiomáticas e phrasal verbs.
