Grounding

Grounding is a common form of punishment for young people who disobey their parents. Grounding means that they are not allowed to go out, after school or on weekends, for a certain period of time. This could be from one day to ____ month or more, depending upon the gravity of the offense. During that time, though, they must continue to go to school, to work if they have a job, and do other errands approved by their parents.

____ term “grounding” is ____ aviation term. A plane is grounded when it is not allowed to fly for any reason. Similarly, pilots or other flying personnel are grounded when they are not allowed to fly because of illness or for disobeying the rules.

Para identificar o tempo verbal, olhe para os verbos conjugados da frase.

  1. O verbo principal é means, de to mean. Ele está na 3ª pessoa do singular, com o -s característico do Simple Present: Grounding means....

  2. Depois vem are not allowed, de to be + particípio (allowed). Aqui está a voz passiva, e o verbo auxiliar are está no presente: they are not allowed to go out.

  3. Os dois verbos estão no presente simples. A frase descreve uma regra geral, que vale sempre, e esse é o uso típico do Simple Present.

  4. Os outros tempos não aparecem na frase:

  • Simple Past exigiria meant e were not allowed.
  • Future Perfect exigiria will have + particípio.
  • Present Perfect exigiria has/have + particípio, como em has meant. O que há aqui é are + allowed, que é voz passiva, não have.

Portanto, o tempo verbal é o Simple Present.

Alternativa C.

Pegadinha: A alternativa D engana quem vê o particípio 'allowed' e pensa em Present Perfect, mas o auxiliar é 'are' (voz passiva), não 'have'.

Por que as outras alternativas estão erradas

  • AO Simple Past usaria 'meant' e 'were not allowed', mas a frase traz 'means' e 'are'.
  • BO Future Perfect exige 'will have + particípio', o que não aparece na frase.
  • DConfunde o particípio 'allowed' (voz passiva com 'are') com Present Perfect, que exigiria 'have/has'.

Assunto: Tempos verbais e verbos modais.
